Magna Carta

The Magna Carta was a document signed that said that the King of England now had limited power.

Effects of Magna Carta

The Magna Carta limited the kings rights. For example, the king could throw people in jail for no reason. The Magna Carta limited that right  to that someone had to be convicted of a crime by a jury to be thrown in jail. Another important right in the Magna Carta was that everyone including the King had to follow the law. This right became one of the basic rights of England.

Changes After Magna Carta

Picture
The Magna Carta caused people to think of new ways to limit the kings power. For example a council was developed to advise the king. This council eventually evolved into the Parliament that governs England today. By the late Middle Ages, the King could not do very much with out help from the Parliament.  Another limit was that Judges were free of royal control. This limit was made to insure the people's rights stayed in the government. These steps led to the introducing of democracy in England today.
